The Portable Virtual Cities Server



A computer running Microsoft Windows, with permissions to install software to the root of a drive (hard drive or USB stick) and the ability to run programs as Administrator. Java must also be installed.

Depending on your Windows configuration, you may not see file extensions like .exe, .zip, and .bat, as described below.


  1. Download from the link above to the root of your drive. In this example the file is downloaded to the root of the C: drive.

  1. Right-click on the file and choose Extract All....

  1. Choose the default folder to extract to, virtual_cities. If you are installing to a drive other than C:, you will see the appropriate letter in place of C:. The important thing is that you install to the root of your drive, eg X:\virtual_cities if your drive letter is X. Click Extract.

  1. You will now have a folder virtual_cities at the root of your drive. Navigate to the virtual_cities > PostgreSQLPortable folder. Right-click on the PostgreSqlPortable.exe file and choose Run as administrator. Allow the program to run as Administrator when prompted.

  1. The PostgreSQL control window will pop up. Note that the light is red, indicating the Shutdown state. Click the Start PostgreSQL 8.3 button.

  1. After a short time, the light will turn green. PostgreSQL is now Running.

  1. Open the virtual_cities > vcities > django > projects > vcity folder. Double-click on the runserver.bat file.

  1. A cmd.exe window will pop up showing the status of the Django web server. After a short time, the web server will begin running.

  1. The portable virtual cities server is now running. You can access the city editor through your web browser by going to http://localhost/vcity/ed.
